About MSSW

The goal of Molecular Science Student Workbench is to promote the use of molecular data in the identification and exploration of biological problems with an evolutionary perspective throughout undergraduate biology curricula. This will be accomplished by providing undergraduate faculty and students access to the powerful state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools currently in use by the research community transformed to afford a cognitively supportive environment. These products will enable undergraduate students to investigate current problems in biology using molecular biology tools and skills.

A Letter from Founder

Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Web site of the Molecular Science Student Workbench project for bioinformatics education. Since you have come to this site, you are probably aware that bioinformatics has become a critically important area of biology. As a science, biology has always been driven by information, such as extensive field observations and careful experiments on organisms. (more...)

Computational Biology and Chemistry in the Classroom - A Hands-on Workshop for Educators

The workshop will be held from June 2 to June 6 this summer. NCSA has created an integrated interface to optimize the connection between lesson material, text-based tools, and computing tools in both biology and chemistry. In addition, NCSA has created an authoring suite to allow for the EASY creation of new lesson materials in such integrated environment. During the workshop attendees will be able to use the authoring suite to compose new lessons.

Interactive lessons are developed!
by Admin User - Wednesday, 26 March 2008, 03:45 PM

The aim of these interactive lessons is to let students
1. Have a clear exposition of a biological topic.
2. Have ready access to background and advanced materials
3. Enhance the learning of the material with exercises in which the student accesses bioinformatics research tools to illustrate the principles of the lesson and to provide a basis for independent student exploration.
We further developed Chemistry Connection Section to get you familiar with the connection between Biology and Chemistry.

Adding two interactive lessons!
by Admin User - Wednesday, 26 March 2008, 03:43 PM

We have developed two intergral lessons. One is an interactive tutorial on sickle cell disease and the other is an interactive tutorial on writing a biology research paper

At this point it would be very useful to get broad feedback on these lessons from instructors and students.  Accordingly, we would be most grateful if you would be willing to work through one or both of these and send comments to us in a 20-30 minute-length survey

The unguided, free format version of the survey is here:
https://webtools.uiuc.edu/survey/Secure?id=4620237

OR, if you prefer the more structured, guided form of the survey; please follow this link:
https://webtools.uiuc.edu/survey/Secure?id=1517328

If you have a group of students you could suggest to look at these materials, that would be wonderful.  Also, please feel free to share with any colleagues.  None of the materials are in any way confidential or proprietary.  On the contrary, we want them to be as fully disseminated as possible.

Sincerely,

The Biology Student Workbench Team
